R2 Autonomy Platform

Rivian’s R2 midsize SUV platform is anchored by an in-house drive unit, internal network architecture, computer topology, and software stack, with a new perception system built around 11 cameras, five radars, and more powerful compute to support advanced autonomy. The launch variant is a well-equipped Dual-Motor AWD model, while the broader R2/R3 family is expected to offer Single-Motor, Dual-Motor, and Tri-Motor configurations, over 300 miles of range, 10% to 80% DC fast charging in under 30 minutes, and international availability after North America. Rivian moved R2 production from Georgia to Normal, Illinois, pulling SOP into 1H26 and targeting more than $2.25 billion in savings, alongside a 95%-sourced bill of materials at roughly half the improved R1 BOM. The company has finished the 1.1 million sq ft body shop and general assembly building plus the 1.2 million sq ft supplier park/logistics center, begun equipment bring-up and prototype validation builds, and expects to commission the new line in Q3 2025. Battery supply is secured through a multi-year LG Energy Solution deal for 4695 cylindrical cells, while a zonal network architecture has cut ECUs by about 60%; Rivian also positions the platform for future eyes-off and level 4-capable autonomy and has said its third-generation autonomy platform for R2 will launch in late 2026, with Uber investing up to $1.25 billion through 2031 for an autonomous R2 robotaxi fleet.
